Aquatic and Pool Therapy
You don’t have to be able to swim, but you can’t be afraid of the water.
Total Function Physical Therapy has teamed with Colorado Springs Recreation Center to offer Aquatic and Pool Therapy sessions! Aquatic therapy is beneficial for a variety of patient populations. Aquatic therapy is especially beneficial for people who have difficulty with weight bearing activities due to arthritis, recent fracture, sprains, or even their own weight.
Water is 500-800 times more supportive than air, so that pain conditions respond extremely well. It also provides resistance to movement in all planes of direction, so that every body part is worked. 50% body weight is unloaded at waist line in water and up to 90% in water up to the neck. For many people, this is an incredible relief. Aquatic Therapy also has the advantage of providing gentle compression and is wonderful for circulatory issues.
These properties of water are used so that the treatment can range from passive, relaxing, almost gravity free movement to extremely vigorous strengthening and cardiac work. And because the therapist is in the water with the patient, they can use their hands for neuro re-education, traction and mobilization. Even small changes in movement patterns can result in use of completely different muscle groups.
Working in the water provides a liberating physical environment to work on mobility, stability, strength, and posture.
Only two minutes away from our Pikes Peak Ave location, the pool at the Colorado Springs Recreation Center features lap lanes, a zero-entry, current river, and a hot tub. The Pool is adequately heated and the hot tub is kept at approximately 102°. The maximum depth of the lap lanes is 4’ 6” , ideal for swimming and water walking. The current river is another ideal place for water walking, with a maximum depth of 3’ 6”.
